A national celebration established in 1977

May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month—a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Much like Black History and Women's History celebrations, APA Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill.

In July 2005, 14.4 million U.S. residents said they were Asian or Asian in combination with one or more other races. This group comprised about 5 percent of the total population. California had the largest population (4.9 million) of people of this group. Asian population grew by 3%, a total number of 421,000, between 2004 and 2005, which is the highest of any race group during that time period. There is a 3.4% growth of the Asian population between 2003 and 2004, the highest of any race group during that time period. Poverty rate for Asians in 2004 is 9.8%, down from 11.8% in 2003. There are 8.7 million Asian-born residents, taking up one-fourth of the nation’s total foreign-born population.
